One suspects that the cliches inherent in the Pathe five-reeler New York were already in place in the William Hurlbut stage play upon which it was based. Yet another backstage yarn, the film has all the usual ingredients: Starstruck heroine, domineering stage mother, rapacious producer, wisecracking chorus girls, et. al. One scene which amused Broadway sophisticates showed a group of chorines attending a private supper party while still dressed in their expensive stage costumes (it was hardly likely that any responsible producer would allow his costly wardrobe to risk soup-and-booze stains!) The film's highlight was an elephantine musical production number (minus the music), which reportedly out-Ziegfelded Ziegfeld.
