Synopsis by Mark Deming

A young woman searching for someone close to her cannot let go of her hopes in this atmospheric drama from Canadian filmmaker Rafael Ouellet. Carla (Carla Turcotte) is a sixteen-year-old girl whose sister Maggie has mysteriously disappeared. While some have given up hope of finding Maggie, Carla is determined that she'll see her sister again some day. Carla spends her days posting fliers in town and wandering the countryside with her family, friends and even some cooperative strangers, hoping against hope they'll catch a glimpse of Maggie. The situation comes to a tragic but seemingly inevitable conclusion when Maggie's body is found by the local police. But despite the evidence that Maggie is dead, Carla refuses to believe that she's gone forever, and continues to look for some sort of contact with her late sister. New Denmark was an official selection at the 2009 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.
