During a fight with the Angel Zeruel, Shinji achieves a seemingly impossible synch ratio of 400%, but as a consequence, his corporeal self is lost within the entry plug, leaving his soul and body floating in the liquid as a primordial soup. Terrified that they've lost him, Misato and Ritsuko work to restore his body, while Shinji embarks on a complex and often surreal exploration of his physical and spiritual identity.
