Synopsis by Hal Erickson

Beamed out to the British regional and provincial markets serviced by the BBC, Nationwide was advertised as a news program, but was actually devoted to human-interest featurettes and amusing trivialities. Segments included "Wellings' Follies," in which host Bob Wellings poked fun at bad architectural concepts; "Watchdog," an animated feature wherein Britain's legal inequities were set to music; and "Down and Out," a fairly serious study of social problems. Most viewers remember the series only for its "animal" segments, featuring such worthies as a drunken snail and a skateboarding duck. Nationwide was broadcast in a nightly 15-minute slot from 1969 to 1972.
