Synopsis by Eleanor Mannikka

The heroine Yuri (Kazuko Kato) in this story is a young, fashionably dressed woman who goes to all the right places and has all the right friends and considers those attributes to be almost everything she wants. The rest of the goals on her list are to continue to live well, without succumbing to the patterns set by the parents of her generation: workaholic fathers and dedicated homemaker mothers. Yuri has a short fling with a visiting university student, but since both openly acknowledge they have more permanent relationships with someone else, their sexual liaison will never lead to anything more than a footnote to the main texts of their lives -- written in what seems to be very vapid prose indeed. This height of fashionable living is termed kurisutaru or "crystal," an adjective that came to describe the amorphous, elitist goals of Japanese youth in the early 1980s, taken from a novel popular at that time.
