Synopsis by Kristie Hassen

Working as a carpenter, Lucin (Rudolf Hrusinsky) endulges in alcoholism, losing his self respect as well as respect from those around him. Only Magdalena (Hana Hegorova) concerns herself with helping Lucin find some meaning and direction in his life, though she herself hasn't had a perfect past. Without engaging in romantic contrivance, this drama reflects a sense of humanity and sympathy, realistically implying the emotional depth of the lead characters. One of the first important collaborations between Czechoslovakian director Karel Kachyna (who also co-wrote) and screenwriter Jan Prochazka, Nadeje/The Hope would set a standard of psycho-social dramas to come such as At' zije republika/Long Live the Republic (1965), Kocar do Vidne/Coach to Vienna (1966), and Noc nevesty/Night of the Bride (1967).
