Synopsis by Hal Erickson

The all-black Mr. Washington Goes to Town is purely and simply a vehicle for the screamingly funny comedy team of F. E. Miller and Mantan Moreland. The whole story takes place in a fancy hotel, with heroes Wallingford (Miller) and Schenectady (Moreland) trying to raise enough money to buy the joint. The plot requires Schenectady to double as both bellboy and elevator operator, with hilarious results. Virtually every "hotel farce" gag in existence is trotted out during the film, including the old one about the gorgeous guest with the insanely jealous husband. Best of all are Miller and Moreland's zany dialogue exchanges, in which both parties continually answer questions that haven't been asked yet.
