Synopsis by Mark Deming

Love brings two people together but fate has other plans in this lavish blend of romance, drama, and music. It's 1992, and Harry (Shahid Kapoor) is a carefree young man living in a farming community in Punjab who dreams of becoming a pilot with the Indian Air Force. One day, Harry meets Aayet (Sonam Kapoor), a beautiful young woman whose family has come to town in hopes of escaping political unrest in Kashmir. While Harry is Hindu and Aayet is Muslim, it's love at first sight for both of them, and they hope to spend their lives together. However, Harry is called away to join the Air Force and Aayet and her family must once again move on, forcing them to separate. Several years later, Harry is on an assignment with the RAF in Scotland when to his surprise he crosses paths with Aayet, who is helping her family run an antique shop. The lovers are certain this is a sign that they were meant to be together, but when fighting in Kargil calls Harry away, they once again discover their happiness is short-lived. Mausam was the first directorial assignment for veteran actor Pankaj Kapur; his son Shahid plays Harry the pilot.
