Synopsis by Clarke Fountain

Matilda has been in love three times, and three times her boyfriends have met with violent deaths. This is enough to daunt any person, and it certainly does slow down her romantic aspirations. However, her wealthy Neapolitan family is determined that she should not remain "on the shelf," and insist that she take an advertisement in the personals section of the paper. Meanwhile, Torquato, a shy museum worker who secretly has aspirations as a painter, has a good ally in the person of his landlord, who spies the ad and arranges things so that he and Matilda meet. As soon as that hurdle is over with, they begin to click as a couple, until Torquato learns about his three very dead predecessors. This prompts him to head for the hills away from Matilda. However, soon she has done something so wonderful that he has to return, if only to thank her: she has taken his hidden paintings and arranged a successful art exhibition for them. Through a series of lucky mishaps, Torquato narrowly avoids the accidents someone has planned for him, and in this comedy, love conquers all -- even superstition.
