The series continues to explore the many musicians who lived and worked in Vienna, placing composers and their works in the environment which nourished their creativity. In Man and Music: The New Music, the focus is on Arnold Schoenberg, one of the brightest stars of the new century. His method of composition was based on a series of 12 tones, a radical departure from the system used before. Influenced by both Mahler and Brahms, he was a also remarkable teacher with gifted students, including Alban Berg, Anton Webern, and John Cage. In 1934, he settled in California.
