Synopsis by Alice Day

Heifetz and Scriabin were among the Russian composers who continued to emerge from the conservatories that were begun by the Rubenstein brothers, and the future of Russian music seemed secure. In this series of programs, the featured composers are seen against historical events and cultural developments that affected their works. Man and Music: Music for the World looks at some of the composers who left Russia, including Stravinsky and Rachmaninov, and were able to retain a distinctly Russian feeling in their compositions.
