Synopsis by Alice Day
Russian music continues to develop, as seen in Man and Music: Music for a Nation with the rise of Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and his contemporaries. The two Russian brothers Anton Rubinstein and Nikolai Rubinstein exerted their influence on him and provided employment and financial help. The program also looks at five composers who made up the group known as the Mighty Fistful or the Mighty Five: Modest Mussorgsky, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, César Cui, Mily Balakirev, and Alexander Borodin. Together, they worked to promote the distinct sound of Russian music and to reject the influences of Western music.
