Synopsis by Mark Deming

A simple woman achieves fame and fortune without realizing she's made herself a laughingstock in the satiric comedy Mama Es Boba. Gema (Faustina Camacho) and Toribio (Eduardo Antuna) are a poor and not especially bright couple who live in the Spanish provinces. Gema works as a scrubwoman, while Toribio is out of a job. When a pair of financiers, Ana (Cristina Marcos) and Enrique (Gines Garcia Millan), open a TV station in the small town Gema calls home, they encounter her and get the idea it would be hilarious to have this obvious dullard reading the news each night. Gema takes the job, and not realizing she's the butt of a massive joke, thinks she's become a great success in television; her son Martin (Jose Luis Lago), however, is sharp enough to know she's making a fool of herself, and this gives the local bullies even more ammunition to use against him.
