Synopsis by Mark Deming
"Das Lied Von Der Erde" ("The Song of the Earth") was one of Gustav Mahler's most deeply personal works, a meditation on themes of mortality in Chinese poetry written in the wake of the death of his daughter and his own diagnosis of a serious heart condition. This home video release records a 1997 performance of the composition by one of Europe's most innovative classical and avant-garde ensembles, the Bass Normandy Orchestra Ensemble under the direction of Dominique Debart. Also included is a performance of "Kindertotenlieder" by The Atelier Lyrique et Symphonique du Centre, under the direction of Amaury de Closel.
