Synopsis by Clarke Fountain
This documentary explores the 1956 anti-communist uprising in Hungary and the corresponding effects of the Soviet crackdown on the dissidents and revolutionaries on Hungarian culture. Since a great deal must be explained before the interviews with the principals will make sense, it takes a certain amount of patience to get the most benefit from this well-received film. It is particularly heartening to see old adversaries apparently at ease with one another and at peace with themselves, since the earlier conflict nearly destroyed the civil life of the nation.
