Synopsis by Forrest Spencer

The story of René François-Ghislain Magritte is an interesting tale. He was a famous Belgian painter, born in the late 19th century, who studied at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels and became known for the surrealistic style in his works. The surrealist movement in the early 20th century influenced him deeply, which was clearly displayed by the time of his first exhibition in 1927. Magritte's life and work are examined in this documentary -- work that was noted for the extraordinary use of commonplace objects and subjects in relation to one another, usually giving a new meaning to several separate, unrelated objects. This 55-minute video looks into the life of an artist and the influences upon his art.
