Synopsis by Clarke Fountain

In the lovely country once known as Ceylon, which is now called Sri Lanka, an ugly war is raging even now between the reportedly oppressive Buddhist regime of the majority of the population and the Tamil minority population, whose struggles are reportedly being funded by the Indian government. It is alleged that the Tamils want their portion of the island nation to be governed by India, or that they want to hand their country over to India, or that they want to govern instead of the majority Buddhists. Probably some of the Tamils do share this viewpoint, but the situation is clearly more complicated than that, as the majority simply wish to be left to pursue their own way of life and religion. The conflict has generated a population of political refugees. This documentary explores the plight of fifty Tamil men who have sought asylum in Switzerland, and it shows how, though they are permitted to work, their circumstances are spare indeed -- and the cold and reserved-appearing Swiss don't make their adjustment to their plight any easier.
