Synopsis by Sally Barber

Once a medieval fortress and home to France's kings, the Louvre in Paris has been a museum since 1793, making it one of the oldest museums in the world. Seven departments within the museum contain works dating back to the earliest civilizations of man. The Louvre 200 series consists of three programs created to celebrate this fine art museum's bicentennial anniversary. Louvre 200, Vol. 1: A Museum in Time chronicles the evolution of this grand museum from its days as a medieval fortress to the founding of the museum in 1793 to its modern influence on European culture. Louvre 200, Vol. 2: At the Louvre With the Masters offers a guided tour of the Louvre based on material found in notebooks, paintings, and the studios of 19th century painters Courbet, Degas, and Cezanne. Louvre 200, Vol. 3: Selected Places offers an exclusive visit to rooms rarely seen by the public, including sculpture courts, the gallery of the Seasons of Poussin, the historic offices of the Finance Minister, the Great Gallery, the Venus de Milo, the Mona Lisa, and other timeless treasures.
