Although he seemed to have perished in the House of Beggars blaze, chapter nine of Lost City of the Jungle reveals that Rod Stanton (Russell Hayden) was saved in the nick of time by Tal Shan (Keye Luke), who broke down the door. Dr. Elmore (John Eldredge), meanwhile, is kept under lock and key on a derelict schooner , but refuses to comply with Sir Eric's demand that he translate the secret hieroglyphs. As a bargaining tool, Sir Eric has Marjorie Elmore (Jane Adams) abducted as well, but Elmore manages to get a message out to Rod and Tal. While the heroes fight Sir Eric's henchmen, a helpless Marjorie is staring directly into a mechanically operated gun.
