Chapter four of Lost City of the Jungle reveals that both Rod (Russell Hayden) and Tal Shan (Keye Luke) escaped the trap set by nefarious Sir Eric Hazarias (Lionel Atwill) before the sonic wavelengths caused the collapse of the Pendrang. Angered by the destruction, tribesmen capture Rod and leave him on a platform high above a pit filled with ferocious lions. Tal manages to throw him a rope, but as Rod makes his way across the pit to safety, the rope begins to break.
