Bernard's plan to build an S.O.S. sign on the beach is vehemently opposed by Rose, who believes that such an effort will only give the survivors a false sense of hope. Flashback to the day Rose and Bernard first met, and it's obvious that the couple were deeply in love from the very beginning. When Bernard proposed to Rose, however, a confession from Rose that she has terminal cancer only makes Bernard more determined to take her as his wife. Later, while honeymooning in Australia, Bernard reveals that the trip was actually a ploy to get Rose to a world famous faith healer. Though Rose isn't a believer, she goes along with the plan anyway just to please Bernard. When the faith healer tells Rose that there is nothing he can do for her, she nobly attempts to preserve Bernard's hope by letting him think that she is cured. Back at the beach, Rose finally reveals the truth to Bernard. But there's a catch, because despite the fact that the faith healer failed Rose, the island has apparently cured her cancer much like it gave Locke the ability to walk again. When Bernard realizes that Rose doesn't want to be captured because of this, he ceases work on the S.O.S. sign and vows that they will remain together on the island. Deep in the hatch, Locke is attempting to draw the map he saw on the blast door from memory to no avail as Jack and Kate set out into the jungle in hopes of trading Henry for Walt.
