Two outsiders with more ambition than skill try to make a go of life in the big city in this independent comedy-drama from Iranian filmmaker Saman Salour. Hamid (Hamid Habibifar) and Behrooz (Behrooz Jalili) are two cousins trying to make a career for themselves in Iran's capitol city. Hamid is a fast-talking self-styled idea man with a background in telecommunications who is starting a bootleg satellite television operation, while quiet and withdrawn Behrooz is his right hand man. However, while the two men have dared to dream big since moving to the big city, neither has the smarts or the nerve to succeed in an illegal business. Taraneh Tanhaiye Tehran (aka Lonely Tunes of Tehran) was shot on a shoestring budget, with Salour using non-professional actors and filming on the fly without official production permits. However, the finish product was screened in competition at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival, where it was presented as part of the Directors' Fortnight series.
