Synopsis by Mark Deming

Cuban dissidents seek a new life in the United States, but discover the passage across the ocean is a dangerous and forbidding experience in this adventure-drama inspired by actual events. Fidel Jimenez Moralez (Oscar Torres) is an artist who was born and raised in Cuba. Moralez has long dreamed of using his creative talents to earn his living, but authorities in Cuba inform him that his work does not fit their political agenda and he is forbidden to paint. Angry, Moralez attempts to flee Cuba on a homemade raft, but he's captured, and after he's falsely accused of being an operative for the C.I.A., Moralez is sentenced to 15 years is one of the island's worst prisons. After four years, Moralez is released under mysterious circumstances and he decides to try escaping to America again. However, while he's able to elude the Cuban Coast Guard this time, he discovers the journey awaiting him and his comrades is a nightmare that's just beginning.
