Synopsis by Mark Deming

A man who lives on the wrong side of the law shows he can do good and bad with equal enthusiasm in this action drama from Japan. Tsuyoshi Shindo (Tatsuya Fuji) is a suave but hard-boiled gangster who is still coming to terms with those who wronged him in the past. Shindo decides to pay a visit to the decaying coastal village where he grew up to settle an old feud with Sakaguchi (Ryuzo Hayashi), a powerful mob kingpin. As Shindo and Sakaguchi play cat and mouse, the vengeful gangster romances a beautiful woman who has been unlucky in love, offers some sage advice to a young man making his way into the world, and befriends a lonely child. Tomo Yo Shizukani Nemure (aka Let Him Rest in Peace) was a major success in Japan, establishing filmmaker Yoichi Sai as one of Japan's leading genre filmmakers; the film made its belated debut outside Japan at the 2010 Rotterdam International Film Festival.
