French filmmaker Julien Plantureux directs the documentary Lester James Peries: Cineaste From Another Time, a portrait of the filmmaker Lester James Peries. Born in Ceylon, Sri Lanka, before the country had a film industry, Peries studied in London and returned to his homeland in the 1950s. After making some government films, he make the first Sinhalese feature film, Line of Destiny, to be screened at Cannes. The film explores the life and work of the director through interviews, film clips, and archival footage. In a conversation at his home in the capital city of Colombo, Peries reveals his thoughts on filmmaking, as well as some of his inspirations. This documentary was shown in a special screening at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival.
