Synopsis by Janiss Garza

Shahirar, the Caliph of India, has ordered his wife, Scheherazade, to be executed, but she saves herself by offering to tell him a story. Craftily, she never finishes her tale, which she relates to him every night, and leaves him hanging in the morning. The Caliph is so impressed with the story that he decides not to execute Scheherazade after all. The story concerns Princess Gul-Y-Hanur, who is shipwrecked on a coast where her mode of worship is considered impious. She is given over to Prince Soleiman for her sins, but he is secretly a professor of Islam and he helps her to escape. When his deed is discovered he is sentenced to death, but Allah turns the people into stone. Soleiman and Gul-Y-Hanur return to her land, where the Caliph abdicates in favor of the prince. Although this version of the Arabian Nights tales was released by a French film company, its director, Victor Tourjansky, and the cast were all Russian, and many of the exteriors were shot near Tunis.
