A man blinded by ambition is the protagonist of this award winning drama set on New Year's Eve, 1987. Lefteris, a wealthy engineer, celebrates the new year in his lovely home with his wife and family. A surprise visitor comes to the door. It is Panayotis, an old friend from school. His presence reminds Lefteris of his lost love Dimitra whom he lost in favor of success. The story jumps back to 1973 where Lefteris is living with Dimitra and studying in Athens. His family disapproves of his beautiful lover. His uncle, who has paid his tuition calls her a whore. Dimitra stayed loyal to Lefteris. She even ignored her own studies to help him. Upon graduating, he takes a two-year job in Germany and then does his obligatory sting in the navy. While he continues to see Dimitra, his visits become fewer and farther between. After one such visit Dimitra finds herself pregnant. Lefteris berates her for that and she gets an abortion. She then dumps him for his callousness and disloyalty.
