Synopsis by Alice Day

In 1989, science teacher Bob Madar began the Field Biology Program as an attempt to prevent dropouts at Crescent Valley High School in Corvallis, OR. Since then, it has developed into a two-year biology class that welcomes students from all academic levels. In Learning That Works: Science in the Real World -- Community Projects, students are shown spending the first year on biology basics and honing research and field work skills; the second year deals almost entirely with field work. They work with scientists from area labs and develop projects that appeal to their interests in addition to benefiting the community.
