Synopsis by Sandra Brennan
The potential dangers of fundamentalist Muslim fanaticism are presented in this provocative Algerian drama that is based on a true story. Salima and her husband Ali lead modern lives in Algeria. Salima is a schoolteacher, and Ali is an architect who works too hard. They have three adult children, two daughters and a son, Habib. Habib is a religious fanatic who spends most of his time at the mosque. When home, he demands that the family quit it's sinful, secular ways. Salima counsels him to adopt a more moderate approach and to get a job. When Ali begins experiencing paranoid delusions that his wife is possessed, he begins to adopt Habib's point of view. Ali, convinced that his delusions are real, hosts three fanatics who come to free Salima from the devil. The resulting exorcism leaves Salima mute and paralyzed. Salima's brothers press charges, but the fanatics are not prosecuted.
