The last year of Rainer Werner Fassbinder's short life is featured in this biographical documentary on the well-known German director and actor who died in 1982. Images of Fassbinder working under director Wolf Gremm in Gremm's film Kamikaze 1989 and shots of Fassbinder in the director's chair as he put together his last film Querelle form the basis for this synopsis of his final 12 months. The trials of hard living are revealed on his face as he directs Querelle just as his intense preoccupation with the details of a scene reveal his vision at work.
