Synopsis by Bhob Stewart

Adapted from the novel by Miguel Delibes, this Spanish film is divided into four sections, one for each season. During the '50s, at an impoverished area in central Spain, young Nini (Alvaro Monje) and his widowed father (Jose Caride) live in a cave on the fringe of a poverty-stricken village. The father ekes out a living by capturing and selling water rats. Writer-director Antonio Gimenez-Rico calls Las Ratas an "allegory of the human condition."
