Mexican helmer Emilio Fernandez's unusual period drama Las Abandonadas (The Abandoned) unfurls in Mexico at the turn of the 20th century, where a young bride-to-be is suddenly jilted by her chauvinistic fiancé. Bereft of a partner, she must support herself and her son and take on the difficulties of single motherhood.
