Synopsis by Mark Deming
Legendary tenor Plácido Domingo stars in this production of one of Giacomo Puccini's most unusual operas, set against the backdrop of the California Gold Rush of 1849. La Fanciulla Del West features Domingo as the dashing bandit Ramirez while Barbara Daniels co-stars as the beautiful dreamer Minnie, who saves Ramirez from a gang of lawmen, not knowing she already knows him as barfly Johnson. Staged by New York's Metropolitan Opera Company, this production of La Fanciulla Del West features Leonard Slatkin leading the Metropolitan Opera and Metropolitan Chorus.
