Synopsis by Nathan Southern
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed his opera seria La Clemenza di Tito (The Clemency of Titus) just prior to his death; it was produced in 1791, at Prague's Estates Theater. The composer based the work on a libretto by Metastasio, adapted loosely from the life of Emperor Titus Flavius Vespasianus of Rome, and inspired by J.C. Bach's La Clemenza di scipione. The work - Mozart's operatic swan song - tells of Vitellia's attempts to eke out a convoluted revenge against Titus (AKA Tito) for deposing her father, the emperor Vitellius. Göran Järvefelt mounted this particular production at the Drottningholm Court Theater in 1987, with a cast that includes Stefan Dahlberg as Tito, Anita Soldh as Vitellia, Lani Poulson as Sesto, and Pia-Marie Nilsson as Servilia. The Chorus and Orchestra of the Drottningholm Court Theater, as conducted by Arnold Östman, provide musical accompaniment.
