Synopsis by Hal Erickson

Cenerentola is a literal filmization of the obscure Rossini comic opera of the same name. A lighthearted retelling of the Cinderella story, the film stars Lori Landi in the title role. In addition to the traditional characters of the Prince, the Fairy Godmother and the Three Wicked Stepsisters, Rossini's libretto managed to include a comedy-relief "fantastic" named Don Magnifico. As sung by Vito De Taranto, it is this tacked-on character who steals the show. Cenerentola was attractively lensed on location in Milan and Turin; the film was briefly distributed in the U.S. at the same time that Disney's animated Cinderella was unveiled.
