Synopsis by Ryan Shriver

A young woman who relocated for love must confront extraordinary, unplanned circumstances in the romantic drama Lázaro's Girlfriend from Madrid-based Spanish director Fernando Merinero. After one year of separation from her fiancé, Lázaro (Roberto Govin), Dolores (Claudia Rojas) leaves behind her life in Cuba to be near her love. She immediately learns that things are not as they should be when Lázaro fails to meet her at the airport. After conducting a bit of emergency fact-finding, Dolores learns that Lázaro is in jail on attempted rape charges and has picked up a hardcore heroin habit. As she works through her despair while trying to line up accommodations near the jail so she can visit Lázaro, she begins to gain a thorough understanding of her boyfriend's true nature when he asks her to sneak some heroin into jail for him. After initially complying, Dolores has a change of heart and begins to distance herself from Lázaro and his problems, eventually leading the optimistic Cuban to start a new life in her new environment. Lázaro's Girlfriend was an official selection in the 2002 Montreal World Film Festival.
