Burkina Faso-based filmmaker Apolline Traore writes and directs the family drama Kounandi. Baby girl Kounandi is born in a small village. When her mother dies, she is given to a quarreling couple. The baby grows up to be a dwarf and is avoided by the rest of the village. She goes out to the countryside and falls in love with a farmer named Karim. However, Karim is married to a sick woman named Awa. Kounandi is faced with a difficult decision in order to save Karim. Kounandi was shown at the Sundance Film Festival in 2004 as part of the World Cinema program.
