Although ancient Egypt's short-lived boy king Tutankhamen -- crowned at the age of nine and dead by 18 -- did not live to see the kind of power and glory achieved by Khufu or Rameses II, his opulent and well-concealed tomb ultimately ensured him a lasting place in history. In November 1922, a team of archaeologists led by Howard Carter discovered and unsealed King Tut's sacred burial chamber, which no human being had seen for over 3,000 years. The cache of jewelry, furniture, wall paintings, and intact sarcophagus with an inner coffin of solid gold have taught scholars much of what they know about King Tut's life and the period in which he lived.
