Richard's retirement brings him and Hyacinth (Patricia Routledge) more opportunities for trips to the countryside. This time Hyacinth decides they will look at Iron Age remains, and it's Richard's (Clive Swift) job to climb a tree to spot them. Later, Hyacinth calls Elizabeth (Josephine Tewson) over for tea to ask her if she has noticed anything odd about Richard's sarcastic behavior, but Richard isn't the only one acting strange. Hyacinth's sister Rose (Mary Millar) gives up on life in typical dramatic fashion after her boyfriend returns to his wife. Hyacinth tries to talk Rose into coming out of her room before the vicar (Jeremy Gittins) she finds attractive arrives to give her "spiritual counseling."
