Synopsis by Janiss Garza

Charles Shackelton (Sydney Grant) gets a raise in his allowance from his uncle by saying he is married. But when the uncle arrives to visit the family, Shackelton has to come up with a wife and child. So he offers the maid, Jane (Charlotte Greenwood), 500 dollars to play his wife, and since she and her butler husband need the money to start a chicken farm, she agrees. But almost immediately, things go awry. They borrow a baby from a washerwoman who barely understands English and she mistakes the uncle for a kidnapper. Meanwhile, Shackelton's real sweetheart, Lucy Norton (Myrtle Stedman) believes the child really does belong to him and Jane. And Jane's husband starts to think that she and Shackelton are having an affair. Finally, Shackelton is forced to come clean and everything works out. This farce was based on a stage play from the 1890s by W.H. Lestocque.
