Synopsis by Jonathan Crow

Krisztina Deak directs this melodrama about a fractious marriage set in a Slovak village in Hungary during the early 1920s. At the film's opening, impetuous young Ondris (Viktor Bodo) marries -- in grand traditional style -- his father's foster daughter Jadviga (Iidiko Toth), who recently returned from her studies in Germany. During the wedding night, Jadviga reveals some of her private emotional wounds that will require love and nurturing to heal -- something that her hothead husband is unlikely to give. As the film progresses, outside forces begin to impinge on their fragile marriage: the local Slovak community begins agitating for secession, while Jadviga's former lover Franci (Roman Luknar) shows up at their house.
