Synopsis by Nathan Southern
German opera tenor Joseph Schmidt (1903-1942) also established himself as a popular B-movie actor, despite an extraordinarily brief career, cut all too short by his death at age 39 in World War II. His appearances on 78s and in a handful of star vehicles have imparted a cult following to him in recent years, thanks in large part to this rerelease of his second of three musicals, 1933's My Song Goes Round the World. The basic story involves a romantic triangle that develops between the celebrity radio vocalist Ricardo (Schmidt), his stage partner Rico (Victor de Kova), and an attractive young woman named Nina (Charlotte Ander), who feels smitten with both. But the narrative here is really only an excuse, used to thread together several of Schmidt's famed arias, which he performs onscreen.
