Synopsis by Clarke Fountain
The inhabitants of a Budapest apartment building are shown on three crucial days in their lives in September of three different years. The first day, in 1938 before the war, a whole coterie of people circle around the entourage of a famous actress who is staying in the building. This group is shown fighting, having love affairs, and acting as though they have a future. In 1942, however, bombing raids are underway, and horses are wearing gas masks. By 1944, the building's Jewish doctor is threatened with being given over to the Nazis, when the building and all its inhabitants are killed by a bomb.
