Synopsis by Janiss Garza

In 1914, Ireland was still fighting for its independence and this historical drama -- filmed in Ireland -- was potentially inflammatory. Motion Picture News warned, "Mr. Exhibitor, if you believe in the 'Safety First' proposition, warn all Englishmen, Orangemen and the opposition to the Home Rule bill to stay out, or else there will be quite a riot." It opens with the defeat of the Irish nationalists by Castereagh, then follows the efforts of patriot Robert Emmet (Barry O'Brien) in great detail until he is hanged in 1803 by the English. The narrative picks up again with the rise of Daniel O'Connell (Franklyn Hanna) in the 1820s. It ends triumphantly, if prematurely, with the passage of the Home Rule bill. By the time this film was released, England had already repealed it because of World War I. The Easter Rising of 1916 was yet to come, and Ireland (or most of it) wouldn't really become a nation until 1922.
