In this melodramatic tale of adultery and war, a former policeman returns to the village in which he grew up, only to find that the woman he had loved as a young man is now married to a simple but honest peasant. Although he marries someone else, the ex-policeman starts a love affair with his old flame -- only interrupted when the conflagration of World War I calls both him and her husband off to battle. While at the front, the two men fight near each other and the peasant shows his innate selflessness when he sacrifices his own life to save that of his supposed friend -- an act that will have future consequences.
