Synopsis by Steve Blackburn

African-American author and commentator Haskell Ward narrates the first video of a series that examines the history of black Americans. This installment finds Ward and producer/director Robert E. Frye creating a portrait of the small, Deep South town of Griffin, GA, as it was during the first half of the 20th century. Ward, who is from Griffin, enlists the recollections of friends and neighbors to enlighten viewers on what it was like to be a black person in Dixie during the era of segregation. Highlights include an introduction by the late Arthur Ashe. Ward is the author of African Development Reconsidered: New Perspectives From the Continent.
