The Persian War and the resulting economic recession provide the framework for this "slice of life" drama set in New York. Newsman Ignatz is unhappy with his job at the network; not only does he find it intellectually unrewarding, he is also ideologically disillusioned by network politicos. To find greater fulfillment Ignatz secretly moonlights on a cable TV news show. There he meets and begins a homosexual affair with a radical punk. He has been married for the past decade to Lotte who is as earthily pragmatic as he is idealistic. Lotte is completing her doctorate in anthropology and holds a part-time job as a cab driver. When not working or studying, she spends time raising their son. Lotte knows of the affair and tries hard to tolerate it, but when her own needs go unmet, she begins looking for gratification outside the marriage. She thinks she may have found it with Swiss exchange student Sipho, but the relationship turns out to be nothing like she expected it to be.
