Synopsis by Janiss Garza

This adaptation of the A.S.M. Hutchinson novel and play was one of the high points of Percy Marmont's long career. Mark Sabre, also known as "Puzzlehead" Sabre (Marmont), lives in the English town of Tidborough, where he is viewed as a dreamer and something of a loser. His wife, Mabel (Margaret Fielding), does not understand him, but he does have some friends in town in the form of the Widow Pearch (Eugenie Woodward) and her son (Russell Sedgwick). Mabel refuses to tolerate Sabre's protection of young Effie (Gladys Leslie) and her baby, especially when his business rival makes suggestive comments about the friendship. The death of Effie and the child bring shame and scandal to Sabre, whose life becomes even gloomier after young Perch dies during the Great War, and his mother follows soon after. Sabre is finally saved from his misery by the woman he truly loves, Lady Tybar (Ann Forrest). If Winter Comes was a prestige picture for the Fox studios, long and lovingly kept close to the original material.
