Synopsis by Clarke Fountain
This Czechoslovak film is set in Slovakia, which was harshly governed by the occupying Nazis. It follows the life and daydreams of a 12-year-old boy during that period, and does not clearly segregate truth from fantasy. The boy plays games by himself, and frequently fantasizes about facing down the local fascists, a bullying neighbor, and the Germans. "If I had a gun," he says to himself, "I would do this..." When his uncle, a smuggler, leaves a gun with him, he fantasizes about killing the local German commander. Perhaps he did.
