Synopsis by Nathan Southern

Stockholm's Drottningholm Court Theater mounted Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's 1781 opera seria Idomeneo in 1991, with a cast that includes Stuart Kale in the title role, Anita Soldh as Elettra, David Kuebler as Idamante, Ann Christine Biel as Ilia, and John-Eric Jacobsen as Arbace. A film of that live production appears in this home release. Michael Hampe handles direction and Martin Rupprecht designed the sets; The Chorus and Orchestra of the Drottningholm Court Theater provide musical accompaniment. With a libretto by Giambattista Varesco, the story tells of the forbidden love between Princess Ilia of Troy and Prince Idamante of Crete, a relationship overcomplicated by the Trojan-Cretan rivalry and by Idamante's divine-appointed quest to slay a giant sea serpent.
